How shocking.

A leftist folk singer who routinely gave profits away to political causes suddenly shifts gears, becoming the ringleader on an album with a jazzy, danceable – dare we say upbeat? – sound.

That’s the new musical direction for Michelle Shocked, who performs Saturday at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

Shocked caused quite a ripple in the music world when she burst upon the scene with The Texas Campfire Tapes in 1987, describing herself as an activist-feminist-anarchist. She really got noticed with her 1988 album, Short Sharp Shocked, which gave her top hits in England and this country.

Now, Shocked has let her musical direction evolve to a high-energy, rhythm-happy sound with her Captain Swing album.

The singer-songwriter arrives in Los Angeles on her Captain Swing Revue tour at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets for the show are $21.50, available at Ticketmaster outlets and the box office. The Wiltern Theatre is at 3790 Wilshire Blvd. Call (213) 380-5005, (714) 740-2000.
