Michelle Shocked brings her blend of folk, swing, country blues, and old-fashioned protest music for a concert Sept. 1 in Bozeman.

Solo blues artist Spencer Bohren will open the show.

While politically active in her lifestyle, Shocked’s songs, for the most part, are personal.

Her best-known single, “Anchorage,” narrates a letter from a friend who moved to Alaska and became a housewife.

She has recorded four albums, beginning with [The] Texas Campfire Tapes, a solo performance at an outdoor festival recorded on a Walkman.

She followed with Short Sharp Shocked, which came in a cover showing Shocked in a police chokehold at the 1984 Democratic Convention in San Francisco.

Shocked veered away from her folk sound with Captain Swing, which featured swing and boogie woogie-style tunes, complete with horns.

She got some all-star assistance on her latest record, Arkansas Traveler. Among those featured on the songs are Doc Watson, Taj Mahal, Pops Staples, Alison Krauss and Union State [sic], Gatemouth Brown, The Band and Hothouse Flowers.

Show opener Bohren, who has performed and recorded Delta blues for more than 25 years, has shared the stage with the likes of Dr. John, James Brown, the Neville Brothers and John Lee Hooker.

The show, at Willson School Auditorium, 404 W. Main St., begins at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 in advance or $17 the day of the show. They are on sale at Cactus Records in Bozeman. Call Vootie Productions at 586-1992 or Cactus at 587-0245 for information.
